A Birthday Party at Home Restaurant

A Birthday Party
AT HOME RESTAURANT
Recently a co-worker of my husbands celebrated a pretty big milestone of a birthday and they decided to have a surprise party for him at a local restaurant in Marble Hill. We had been to Home several times before and usually on special occasions like Thanksgiving or New Years Eve with a set menu.
We hadn’t been to eat with their regular menu in quite awhile mainly because of the pandemic and for some reason the powers that be wouldn’t let them utilize their nice outdoor patio for serving meals. I don’t really understand that at all but I am glad they have managed to come through and are back to some kind of normalcy on reopening. This post will give you an idea of what to expect from them.
FESTIVE SET UP
I’m not sure they normally do this but Home happens to be the food vendor at Gibbs Gardens and the party was for an employee from there. We were given the back dining room as a sort of private party area. A lady named Gwen was in charge of the plans and the room had a festive set up.
A separate table was done with signage, baloons, well wishes and the birthday cake which looked quite good. White, peach, black and gold seemed to be the colors of the day. Table settings sported candles for atmosphere and beautiful peach colored roses.
The guests mingled while waiting on the birthday boy to show up. The waiters made their rounds and took drink orders. We ordered our usual martinis as the bartender there makes a great one with blue cheese olives. Special pricing on Thursday nights for those who are in the know as well.
MINGLING AND APPETIZERS
The birthday boy arrived to the shouting of surprise and I think he honestly really was! He worked the room shaking hands (or bumping elbows as required) greeting the guests and thanking them for coming. He stepped up to the birthday table to admire the cake and decorations before being seated at the table of honor with his wife a couple of friends.
The waiters circled with a platter of beef and fennel sausage flatbread with red pepper, onions and mozzarella that was pretty gosh darn good. They also serve several other kinds including one with chicken, roasted garlic and olives or a blue cheese with ricotta sauce, arugula, tomatoes and hearts of palm. Any would have been a good choice.
Other snacks they offer on the menu of late include pimento cheese with peppers and cracker, beer battered onion rings and roasted Brussel sprouts served with a lemon truffle sauce. One of these will be great when drop in for your Thursday martinis.
DINNER
Home changes it’s menu seasonally and gears towards local ingredients and farmers. They are well known for their good burgers and fries-a staple you can never go wrong with there. Other choices include the meat loaf which my husband ordered.
It is served with mashed potatoes and green beans and a covering of sauteed onions. The meat loaf is a tight solid pack-is that a Northern thing? I’m thinking possibly. I prefer the Southern version with a loose meat style. The green beans were tasty but needed to be more tender. I’m thinking those onions might be a lot better crispy from a fryer with no breading as well.
There’s at least one dish from every category of meat on the menu from chicken to lamb, shrimp and beef. Fish lovers can choose between blackened salmon and a pan seared trout. There is usually a good pasta dish on offer as well.
I ordered the daily soup special which was Shrimp Bisque and the Beet and Goat Cheese Salad as my entree. The waiter brought me a nice basket of fresh warm bread with butter to go with them. The soup was drizzled with herbs and oil and was very tasty but I felt it could have been creamier.
The beet salad had both red and yellow varieties nicely roasted. The mixed greens were lovely as was the creamy beautiful goat cheese. My only complaint would be ratios. The ratio of beets to greens and cheese was off. I was left with more beets on the plate with nothing left to go with them. Other salads available includee a Chef’s, a Caesar and local greens with Parmesan dressing.
CONCLUSION
After dinner the birthday boy blew out his candles successfully and we enjoyed cake with a champagne toast to celebrate. Other desserts often include American staples like Carrot Cake, Chocolate Cupcakes and Peanut Butter Bars.
While I wouldn’t say this was the best meal we ever had at this restaurant I can say that it is always dependable to deliver good food along with a cozy casual atmosphere. The owners have been around the area for a long time with several restaurants to their credit. Make a visit soon and enjoy.
